Mannan Binding Lectin (MBL), also called mannose binding lectin or mannose/mannan-binding protein (MBP), is a key serum protein involved in innate immunity, and is specifically involved in providing protection from a number of infectious organisms.

The Mannan Binding Lectin (MBL) pathway has been shown to be a major regulator of the complement system with the MBL/MASP complex able to directly activate C3 and is a key player in translating endogenous and exogenous danger into cellular responses. In addition the .

This indicates that the MBL ELISA may be used in combination with other laboratory and clinical findings for the purpose of providing information about a pathological state.

Some major facts supporting the importance of MBL research in a clinical setting are:

  • MBL deficiency
    • The most common congenital immunodeficiency occurring in 10% of the population (1)
    • A risk factor for infection in combination with an immunocompromised condition (2)
A risk factor for the occurrence of autoimmune diseases (3)
    • Associated with increased susceptibility to sepsis (4)

  • Cardiovascular diseases
    • Prediction of decreased likelihood of myocardial infarction, particularly in diabetic patients (5)
    • Serum levels indicate risk of future coronary artery disease in apparently healthy men but not in women (6)
    • Serum levels are associated with vascular complications in type I diabetes (7)

  • Transplantation
    • MBL levels are associated with graft survival in kidney and heart transplantation (8,9)

  • Cancer
    • MBL-deficiency is associated with severe infections after chemotherapy (10)

  • Apoptosis
    • MBL binds DNA fragments present in apoptotic cells initiating a cellular response (11)

Specifications

  • The human MBL ELISA is a ready-to-use solid-phase enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay based on the sandwich principle with a working time of 4 hours
  • After activation, samples and standards are captured by solid bound mannan
  • Quantitative measurement of natural functional human MBL in serum and plasma
  • Measurable concentration range of 0.41 – 100 ng/ml
  • Sensitivity of 0.41 ng/ml
  • Working volume 100 μl/well
  • 40 samples in duplo
  • Proprietary buffer prevents binding of C1q to immune complexes and disrupt the C1 complex, leaving the carbohydrate binding activity of MBL and the integrity of the MBL complex intact
